DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Opposition to Barrick God Mining Operations
quoted from Rocio Diaz
In 2009, the Dominican people stood up to fight against a cemnt factory that would be installed in the Los Haitises national park...In 2010. it appears that another cause is mobilizing thousands of young people and adults -the presence of the mining consortium Barrick God in Cotui, the head municipality in the province of Sanchez Ramirez which is home to one of the largest Gold mines in the world....
Pueblo Viejo (Old Town) with estimated reserves of 24 millions troy ounces of gold. Activists are concerned about the terms of the agreement with the Dominican State...as well as impacts of the region.
This report has been borrowed from Ms Diaz....I have been investigating in an informal way and it seems that the contract made between the Barrick Gold and the previous President Mejia....was better than the one made with Fernandez for the latter Fernandez got an award in Canada....go figure...
some people are claiming that income from the contracts...should be added to the national budget....we want infrastructure and hospitals and schools to be constructed with the proceedings of the money coming from the contract....Im pretty sure that the Barrick God does not do charity work...if they are in the Pueblo Viejo is because they are making money..another aspect of the operations is the contamination of the waters of the rivers that are located close or near the mines....I will investigate more on the isssue....also you could refer to the geologist Osiris de Leon, he has written about the subject...
